Kobo Mini eReader

Shhhhhhh!! Don't tell Miss Pinky I got myself another eReader (but of course I'm keeping my old one! I promise!). It's a Christmas gift to myself (bought it last Sunday) for all the hard work and stress I've had in the past year. Miss Pinky hates me for being so technological AND being a multi-tasker. I can't help it! ^^

I bought this one because it's light and easy to carry around, unlike my iriver eReader which is heavy... and just heavy... ¬_¬"" But the good thing about my iriver is that it's very good at showing comics / manga and jpeg files which the Kobo Mini is not that good at.

Seriously I'm in love with my new Kobo Mini . It was £49 in Argos (and I thought it was £49.99 - the lady at the till also thought the same too!!).

The only trouble with my Kobo Mini is that it can't read the Waterstone books I bought because they're protected by Adobe DRM. Boohoo! Will I have to purchase the books again? Or will have to read them on my iriver? Oh, the trouble of finding a good eReader!!

The one good thing that I really like is that it fits right into the palm of my hand, and I really have a small, chubby hands! :D

I am very happy with my purchase, and I hope to read loads of books next year!! ^^

p.s. I found a way of reading my Waterstones purchased ebooks on my Kobo Mini and Kobo phone app too!! :D... Follow this YouTube video ^^ (You will need to use a computer to do this!).

International Christmas Ads 2012 (Part 3)

It's Christmas Day, and I have nothing to do this evening!! (Well I do, like watching TV and stuff, but that can wait for the moment!).

This will be my final International Christmas ad post for 2012.

So, which country to start off with???

Hong Kong - IKEA毛公仔祝您聖誕快樂!"Wish You All A Merry X'mas". (It actually means: "Soft toys wishing you a merry Christmas). Yay!! I found the Hong Kong IKEA ad!! It was released on the 22nd December on YouTube, so I'm glad I waited. This is a cutsey ad. It's similar to the Malaysian / Singapore one. Soft toys and IKEA items are used and they are saying thanks for purchasing the soft toys, as the money goes to kids who cannot pay for their education. In Hong Kong, you have to pay for your education!

China - Dove Chocolate 德芙-房祖名分享篇. Awww!! Mega cute, lovey dovey ad!! Dove is actually called Galaxy in the UK. I have no idea why they've given it another name for the international market. And Dove in the UK is a soap brand! Anyway, this ad is great. I think it's part of a series of Dove Chocolate ads in China. The guy in the ad goes and visits his potential girlfriend and gives a box of Dove Chocolates to her... But then she gives the chocolates to her friends who are at her house partying, she then asks the guy where are her chocolates... Poor guy! He has to go and buy another box of Dove Chocolates! :D I love this ad!!

There's more.....

Royal Margin 皇星樓 - London Surrey Quays

Yesterday was my last Christmas meetup with Miss Pinky and her brother Master H. First of all I went to the wrong section of London. I thought I was supposed to be in Waterloo, but actually I was supposed to be going to Surrey Quays!! Miss Pinky would have said "You Muppet!". (Meaning: You Stupid!). Hahahah! So instead of them trekking all the way towards me, I went to Surrey Quays. Both of them were very hungry, and because I was late they wanted to immediately get out and eat. Thankfully Miss Pinky was dressed and ready to go (because she never usually is).

Master H wanted Chinese, Indian or Nando's. Miss Pinky wanted Indian food. And I would eat anything... Unfortunately, there's no Nando's in the area, the local Indian restaurant was closed, and so we ventured into another Chinese restaurant! Hah!

We found ourselves in a very spacious restaurant called Royal Margin 皇星樓 (literally meaning "Emperor Star House"), which isn't far from the Surrey Quays Overground station. I didn't take pictures of the inside unfortunately, but it was nice, although it looked very dim (as in low lighting)... It was in the middle of the afternoon, and I thought it should have been a bit brighter inside.

Deers, Balls and Lights

What a strange title for this post! ^_^

Well I'm trying to fit in two areas of London that always fascinate Londoners and the visitors to London during the Christmas period. I always find this time of the year quite festive, but also quite stressful! So if you have time and you have time to stop shopping, just look around you and see what's around you. :D

First off is Covent Garden. The place where everyone loves to be when it's not too busy...
Giant balls and green bush candies are hanging around the arcade parts...

Angus Steakhouse - London Leicester Square

So after going around the German Market, plus a walk around Covent Garden with my friend Miss Rock who I see only once a year we decided to eat. My friend wanted to eat Westernised style food and nothing Chinese (she's Chinese too and just got back from Hong Kong - but I've just realised that she's totally British! :-S) Hah! And so I suggested Angus Steakhouse. I have been there before, and I knew I would enjoy the food there!! (I didn't take a picture of the outside but enjoy the pics of the food :D).

Well you can't not order a steak whilst at a steak house in which case I ordered the New York Strip, with a side order of chips... I think my egg was slightly under-cooked, but nevertheless I enjoyed it!
New York Strip with peppercorn sauce
I had peppercorn sauce with my steak. Now this is what peppercorn sauce is supposed to be like! Not that brown stuff from one of my previous posts!
The steak doesn't come with sides... this is my chips :)

German Market - London Southbank

Are you still looking for that Christmas present for someone special? Or are you looking for someplace to go just before Christmas?

Well, here's your last chance as there's only a few more days until this German Market closes on December 24th at 10 pm.

I went there on the weekend with a friend, who I'm going to call Miss Rock (because she's into rock music - didn't know that until she told me) who I only see once a year! I told her on that day I started blogging, and she thinks I'm going to start vlogging... Um no way! Writing my opinion is far better than talking about it in front of a camera (well to me anyway!). :P

So the following are pictures from start to finish of the German Market, plus some of the entertainers along Southbank. :D
At the start!

Loads of people at the market

Wahaca - London Covent Garden

So after the work party, I had 4 hours sleep, an 8-hour day at work, and about a half an hour to a 45 minute wait for Mr Games and my friends (who I haven't really gone out with for a very long time, calling them Mr Flirt, Miss Money and my new friend Mr Sensible), we ended up at Wahaca, a Mexican food joint for a small reunion and pre-Christmas meetup, as well as celebrating the end of the year.

Apparently the name of the restaurant and the food derives from a region in Mexico called Oaxaca. I have never tried this place before, and I was very keen to try it out.

Nice design!
This place isn't hard to find, it's in the backstreets of The Strand, but unfortunately there's construction work going on outside the building, so it was hard to take a picture of the outside.

Work Christmas Party at Cubana - London Waterloo

The Christmas parties have started for 2012! (Well for some people it was a week or two weeks ago!).

Every year one of the teams I work with (I work for two teams in one organisation - it's complicated I know!) has a Christmas get together. And every year at least one person has a suggestion on where to go. This time we were going to Cubana in Waterloo, which is a Latin American restaurant.
Outside Cubana
Cubana has been around for a few years now, and I remember a couple years back Miss Pinky and I tried to go in there once but it was fully packed!! Well, at this Christmas party, it was again fully packed!! It is a popular venue for South Londoners and for those working around the area. Plus it's near Waterloo Station! Bonus point for that!! ^^

Cantonese Egg Waffles 鷄蛋仔 in London China Town

Last time when I went to Hong Kong I wanted to try this very famous street food - Cantonese style waffles known as 鷄蛋仔 gai daan jai (a.k.a egg puff or egg waffle). I think a normal waffle mix is used and the only difference is, is that light evaporated milk is used instead of skimmed milk, but anyway they use a special egg shaped waffle pans to make them.

On a recent trip to China Town (the day Miss Pinky decided to come along on my adventure looking for cute stores and eating dim sum), I saw a couple of stores making them outside in this freezing weather! But I didn't buy any to try them out. They are always best served hot from my experience in Hong Kong. :) And funnily enough the ones in China Town are made into different colours on one side, and Miss Pinky and I saw a pink one! (Miss Pinky wasn't interested by the way)...
Pink Egg Waffle (and there's a chocolate one next to it)
Here's how they are served in Hong Kong (picture taken a few years ago)! They are normally put into a brown paper bag.
Hong Kong bought egg waffle ^^
Why not try them out... Tastes like a normal English waffle. They get hard when they're cold. :D And sorry I didn't check the price out... Will do next time when I pass by!!

Which stores to buy them from: Outside Yang Guang Supermarket 阳光超市 and another one which is a couple of doors down next to the car park.
Price: 2.50 for original plain flavour; £3 for other flavours (for both stores!)

If you are looking for a recipe, try this person's one. He uses a normal waffle mix with vanilla essence and doesn't use evaporated milk:

Harvey Nichols Christmas TV Advert 2012

Oh I looooooove this advert from Harvey Nichols - 'Avoid A Same Dress Disaster'!! I am not much into buying their clothes, but seeing this ad just made me laugh! :D It was like watching a battle of survival of the fittest, and it is such a GEEKY ad! I'm sure all the men (but not sure for all the fashionista women out there) will love this one!!

In this ad, two women show up at a party with the same red dress on. They give each other the evil stare and then... The LASER EYES come out and the battle begins to get rid of each other. As only one lady at that party had the right to wear that one red dress! I also found the little dog in the ad amusing as it also had laser eyes! Hahahah!! ^^ At the very end of the ad a third lady  joins in the battle who also had the same red dress on! Harvey Nichols is trying to say 'don't go shopping in that cheap place where everyone else is going to go to!' ^_^

Well done Harvey Nicks for making me laugh. Good advert! (^_^)v

So will you be going to Harvey Nichols to buy that extra special dress?! ^_^ Good luck in avoiding those evil eyes!

IKEA International Christmas Adverts

Ok, I had no intention of blogging about the IKEA adverts, so I was forced asked by Miss Pinky to write a little bit more about them. (She's a TV addict, and she doesn't admit to it! She's also reading my blog and has started to giving me critical feedback! ¬_¬).

I have already posted about the Malaysian/Singapore and Thailand ad, so here's the some of the other ones from around the world plus of course the one from the UK...

UK - Playing With My Friends. This is a cute ad. A one minute long ad compared to all the other IKEA ads I've seen. This is of a little girl who is helping out and making the table for a Christmas lunch party. The adults are dressed up and are also helping out. I love the robot with its laser eyes and magnetic body! Miss Pinky says she loves the big teddy bear, and her brother Master H loves the action figure who looks a little bit like He Man. Hah! A fun ad and I like the song too. ^^

Instant Bubble Milk Tea from 优乐美 U.LOVEIT

I went on another food shopping spree in China Town a few days ago! And I was looking for some dried lotus root to use in Chinese soup, but couldn't find them and so I ended up buying this at New Long Fung Supermarket 新龍鳳行...

Cute Stores in London China Town and Trocadero

Afraid China Town Market is/has closed down... Please look elsewhere for cute stores! I will try and find more!!

Cute stores? Are you looking for cute stores in London? Trying to find that cute, kawaii gift before Christmas or for someone's birthday...? Well then, here's just a small summary of those that I know of around China Town and in Trocadero... There's not many really. They're all in one area. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take pictures of the ones in China Town (but I did take a couple before I was told not to!! No infringement is intended here!!).

So the main one in China Town is called "China Market 中市". There's 3 entrances. One's on Charing Cross Road. The other on Newport Court and the third one is near the car park. It's like a mini mall of different stalls selling very, very cute things to bags to touristy stuff. I love it. There's so much Hello Kitty stuff, stationery and other quirky cute things that girly girls like. ^_^ Miss Pinky tagged along when I was taking these pictures and saw all the Pink Hello Kitty mugs, and she wanted them!! Hah!!

I took this picture from outside the store!!!!

Home Steamed Dim Sum Part Deux

In my previous post on dim sum, I never really showed you peeps out there how simple Chinese people like me actually steam dim sum (and food in general) without having to use a steamer or bamboo baskets. It's not needed. My parents taught me the simple way, and here's how you do it. You can do this with all types of dim sum (except for the ones that need frying... well that's quite obvious, duh! ¬_¬")...

1. Buy a packet of some frozen dim sum of your choice from any Chinese or Asian store / supermarket.
Dim Sum Mix of prawn dumplings, siu maai, beef siu maai and  xiao long bao! ^^

International Christmas Ads 2012 (Part 2)

It's now December and in continuation from my last post on international Christmas ads for this year, I went in search for more. I did the same thing as last time by translating 'Christmas adverts' or 'Christmas' on Google Translator. But first I found the obvious ones in English...

Canada - Runway. If I didn't read the title of this advert, I would've thought this was about spending time with the family or another type of John Lewis ad... But no, it's about about hardware, electrical equipment, tools and furniture! Hah, that got me!

Ireland - SPAR. Hah! This one cracks me up. This one looked like a tourist ad, like 'Come and Visit Ireland' type of ad. Or an ad that was selling Christmas trees. You have to watch it to the very end to find out what this ad is all about. SPAR. The convenience store... ¬_¬" OMG. Never would've thought so...!!

And now with the not so obvious ones...

Tofu Dessert 豆腐花

This is a re-post about Tofu Dessert 豆腐花 because unfortunately the Blogger App on my phone isn't great and doesn't sync properly with the web version. :P And unfortunately, I did not save a copy of the previous post!

So, do you like tofu and have you ever tasted Tofu Dessert before? If not, here's a few pictures of what it looks like. If you're lucky and live near a Chinese / Asian Supermarket or store, you may be lucky to find ready made ones. If not, there are instant packets you can buy to make them yourself. Or if you are very, very lucky you can try them out in a Chinese bakery...

Well, tofu desserts are made with the obvious - tofu. But what is added is syrup and water to give the tofu a sweet taste. And what you have to do is actually scoop or slice the tofu plus add some of the syrup onto your spoon then eat it.

This is an easy dessert to make but as like jelly it takes very long to set.

Try it out if you can find it!! ^^

Yum Cha at Golden Dragon 金龍軒 - London China Town

It's been a long time since I've been out to China Town to 'yum cha' 飲茶 (this literally means 'drink tea'). This type of Chinese dining happens between 6am and 5pm in Hong Kong... In London, it happens between 12pm and 5pm I guess... I actually went out today to take some pictures for another blogpost (which is coming soon) and two days ago Miss Pinky decided to come along, so she invited herself! Hah! ^_^ And in the end, we both ended up at Golden Dragon 金龍軒 (gam long hin) to eat lunch. We have been there before, but that was a very long time ago! And Miss Pinky doesn't remember!

Don't be surprised to find a wait at this place because everyone wants a cheap and cheerful place to eat! Plus people reading their newspapers after eating is normal... The older generation of Chinese people don't rush like us youngsters!!

Burger and Lobster - London Dean Street

I know Burger and Lobster has been blogged about all the time but this is my very first time eating lobster in a restaurant. And it is a messy job I tell you. Messy. However, it was enjoyable doing this in public!

This time I went with an old uni friend who is now a colleague at the place I work. I'm calling her Miss Posh, because she really can be posh at times!

So we left work on time and took the bus, it took us an hour to get there, and luckily we BEAT the queues! Miss Posh told me that you can't really book tables unless you are in a big group. Plus queuing time can be up to an hour and half (or longer maybe). So as soon as we entered we got seated straight away. Happy Geek gives a thumbs up!! (^_^)b

The Yellow House - London Surrey Quays

A few hours later after the Scandinavian Christmas Fair, Miss Pinky, her friends, middle brother, Mr Fly (who I haven't seen for a long time) and I went out to celebrate Miss Pinky's birthday at The Yellow House in Surrey Quays. It's just opposite the Surrey Quays Overground station. However Miss Pinky didn't book a table at the restaurant part, so we had to wait... And I was starving... :(
Outside The Yellow House
Finally after about an hour and a half when everyone arrived, I already had a bowl of handcut chips and we were all drinking we were told our table was ready. Yipee...

Scandinavian Christmas Fair in London Rotherhithe

I received a comment on my previous post about the Rotherhithe Festival that there was going to be a Christmas Fair around the Rotherhithe area between 23rd to 25th November, and it was Miss Pinky's birthday weekend, so we needed to have a meet up and have a look around.

Unfortunately it was raining on the Saturday. :( But we still had a look around... I didn't realise it was a Scandinavian Christmas Fair (Norwegians, Swedish and Finnish)! I didn't even realise Rotherhithe was an area of Scandinavian people... Interesting!

Jam Hsiao 簫敬騰 - World Tour Concert London 2012

I found about this concert a long time ago, but I didn't book my ticket until the last minute because I didn't know if Miss Pinky would have anything planned as it was her birthday on November 22nd... I waited, and waited, and waited for her to plan something. But I gave up as I knew she wanted a quiet birthday, so eventually on one Friday evening (3 weeks ago to be exact) I lost my will and bought a ticket (^_^)v and with all hope it was going to be a great concert.

I hadn't heard of Jam Hsiao 蕭敬騰 (Xiao Jing Teng) until some time last year really. I think a relative of mine in HK is a fan of his and so I had a listen to see what he sounded like many months later.... Once I heard one of his songs I was soon addicted to his voice. My favourite song is Wild Dreams 狂想曲 from the Jam Wild Dreams album - can't stop listening to it!

Now on with the concert!

I learnt my lesson from the Mayday concert earlier this year in March. This time, straight after work I did some food shopping, went home and ate something before heading out to the tube station... I knew where I was going this time round so I wasn't too early or too late either!

When I arrived to the Wembley Arena, there were a lot of people there already, plus there was a long queue of people trying to get last minute tickets at the Box Office...
Outside Wembley Arena
Anyway, once I entered the Arena, there weren't a lot of fans in their seats. And the back part of the Arena was closed off. I guess they wanted people to fill in the other seats before deciding whether to release tickets for the back part... (that's called marketing strategy by the way...!!).
Inside Wembley Arena ... Where's the fans? It's 7.10pm!

Ah!! Here's all the fans! ^^

Honda Poster Advert

This is going to be a very, very short post... I really liked this Honda poster ad! It really caught my eye when I first saw it, so it was obvious that I would take a picture during one evening. (^_^)v
Has that futuristic effect ^^

I just can't describe it. I think I have strange tastes in adverts...

Brilliant stuff!

Update 26/11/2012

Saw this one on the weekend :D

iPod Bus Advert

My poor red bus has been covered with a horrible iPod advert. As you can probably tell I don't like i-anything! I am not an Apple fan as I keep telling all my friends and family. Expensive. Show offs. And not needed. (Sorry to my friends who use iPhones and to iPhone/iPad/iPod users who are reading this blogpost. Not ¬_¬).

Typical anti-Apple talk! Hahahahah...

Apple. We don't need to see a whole bus covered with an iPod advert. We already know it's popular and I'm sure kids will be asking their parents for this at Christmas etc, etc.

Keep it simple Apple!

Carling Zest Poster Advert

As if London needs more binge drinkers!  I saw this advert on Monday and thought well, I am going to try this drink out at some point in the near future (probably this weekend)...

But this advert for Carling Zest is just telling me to drink all night, like from 4pm, when the sun goes down. And well, it is a limited edition drink! ...
Carling Zest Advert
I may do so (as in drink this after 4pm), but I don't think I would want to drink this all night long either! (By the way, I do like the last line "Get a zest for Winter" (meaning 'get a REST for Winter' - well I hope it means that!).

I've just realised that there's so many alcoholic adverts out lately... It is just typical at this time of the year. :P

Are we becoming a nation of alcoholics?

International Christmas Ads 2012 (Part 1)

It's almost Christmas!! And a lot of adverts are coming out now on TV and I also wanted to compare some international Christmas adverts with our own British ones. So first I used Google Translator to translate "Christmas advert" or "Christmas" in every possible language that it could translate... This is my first round and I will search for more soon. Here's the first six ads I found...

Finland - The True Spirit of Christmas. Well, is this an ad to make any comments on? Not really. It shows the true Christmas spirit of the Finnish. So do you want to go to Finland for Christmas? I probably would.

Japan - Seven and I セブン&アイ X, (AKB48 in 7-Eleven). Heheh, my brother explained to me who this Japanese girl band are. AKB48 is a group of 48 Japanese girls who have been split up into 3 groups, A, K and B. This sounds so complicated to me! Well, back to the ad, and well, it's 7-Eleven. They are still BIG in Asia. It's such a shame they didn't do so well in the UK. (I miss 7-Eleven). This is a pretty ad of 7-Eleven's food and it shows that the Japanese can celebrate in style as well!! Better than M&S's ad any day... :P

An African Style "Surprise" Birthday Party

It was Miss Pinky's Aunt's 50th Birthday party yesterday. The party was supposed to be a surprise, but ended up not being a surprise... The aunt knows everything!! ¬_¬"" But before we went to the party, we prepared a lot of food... Well Miss Pinky and her mum prepared it all with jerk in the oven too, and then I was in charge of frying the plantain. (Note to Miss Pinky - I know how to fry things. Chinese people fry food all the time! Stop being so bossy!). Mrs Hen, my colleague and friend, fries plantain for me all the time, and so I know how it all goes. Mrs Hen always serves it with a spicy red peppery sauce for me. :D
Fry, fry, fry that plantain!
The party started off really slowly (I was the only non-African person there!), and thankfully I have been to a few African style parties before (by the way, Miss Pinky is Black African and she doesn't like really spicy food!).

It's a 50th birthday party!
And so I ate two plates of food... This is my first plate...
Fried chicken, jerk chicken, plantain and jollof fried rice
PLUS macaroni cheese at the bottom ~~~
